A dedicated area for the new build has already been set up, but the new webcam section will allow students, staff and the community to check in on its progress whenever they like. The webcam features live pictures broadcast from opposite the building site and features the two huge cranes dominating the town’s skyline at the moment. Vice Principal for Corporate Services at Kirklees College, Melanie Brooke said: “The webcam is a great way for the community, employers, future students and staff to see the development take shape and become a reality. Over the next few months the foundation work will be taking place and then the buildings will start to be constructed. “Our partnership with Kirklees Council on this project has been instrumental to getting this far. Now, we face an exciting count down to the opening of the finished building and once open, it will provide state of the art facilities whilst running in a much more environmentally friendly way.” Kirklees College was one of only thirteen colleges in England given funding by the former Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and preparation on the site begun in November 2009. The building work which is due to last around 104 weeks started in April 2010. The new building is being managed by property developers Strategic Sites and constructed by Allenbuild. The site is surrounded by hoardings featuring artwork from students at Kirklees College’s Highfields Centre. The development covers 24,000 square metres, will be 9 storeys high at its tallest and will achieve a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating of 'excellent' from the Building Research Establishment for its low environmental impact.
